The brig Demerary, from North-America - is the only arrival since our last.

Capt. Adams, of the Demerary before-mentioned, has likewise communicated the following intelligence: When off Surinam, he fell in with His Majesty's ship Leander - the Commander of which informed him, that in company with the Newcastle and Acasta, and off the Island of St. Jago, they observed three vessels crowding on sail, as if anxious to escape - which vessels afterwards proved to be the American frigate Constitution, and two British sloops of war, her prizes, which had jointly engaged her for upwards of twenty minutes, but obliged ultimately to strike - that the Leander had retaken one, the Acasta was in pursuit of the other, and that the Newcastle was in full chase of the enemy's frigate. We hope therefore, to hear very soon of her capture.

LOCAL. [heading]
Fire in Werk & Rust. - Last night, about 10 o'clock, the public was thrown into the utmost consternation and alarm, by the sudden bursting of a tremendous flame, in the most immediate direction of the Court House; and the report of its approaching destruction, with all its valuable contents, was echoed in every street, throughout the district. Happily, however, it proved erroneous; as the destructive element, was found ranging considerably to the leeward of that important edifice. It commenced at a small house near the stelling, aback of the premises of M'Inroy & Co. and was not got under [sic] till six houses were totally destroyed. There were no lives lost; or did any one receive injury, that we have yet been informed of. From His Excellency the Governor, their Honors the Fiscals, the whole body of Public Functionaries, Colonel Codd and the Officers and troops in garrison, the Militia, the Sailors from the shipping, and we may say the remaining part of this great population, to the very negroes; we never recollect witnessing, a greater exertion on such occasions. The only circumstance to be censured, being the wretched state of the town-engines. One wanted a wheel, the other pipes; and had it not been for the one attached to the camp, and the serenity of the night - the calamity would have been perhaps unparalleled in Demerary. We shall give further particulars on Tuesday.

Mahaica-Post. [heading]
The following correspondence, having been sent for an early insertion; we have given it this day, with pleasure. Taking also the liberty of adding - that as Mr. Jack, both as an officer and a gentleman, richly deserves the honor done him; so do all those conferring it, deserve elogium - they having duly appreciated and publicly rewarded merit, notwithstanding it approached them in the character of a subaltern. A circumstance which is to seldom the case.
Lieut. Thomas Jack, 2d Batt. 60th Regit. [sic]
