    • In a letter to the Church Missionary Society in 1846 , Eugene Van Cooten says that he has been responsible for 'the support of my mother & sisters' but that 'They are at present supported by my Mothers brother who is in a position to do so having been for upwards of twenty years the confidential steward of the Duke of Devonshire.' Eugene's mother was Martha nee Smithers. Commercial Directories show the presence of a Mr Sydney Smithers living in proximity to the Duke of Devonshire. [1, 4, 5]
