McFARLANE The death of Mr. William John McFarlane, aged 79 years, occurred at Gympie on Sunday. Born in Belfast (Ireland), the late Mr. McFarlane came out to Queensland in 1863 in the sailing ship Montmorency, landing at Maryborough. He was employed in the timber industry, working at the Dundathu sawmill, at Sims Ltd., and at Messrs. Roonet Ltd., Townsville. He was a saw sharpener by trade. Returning to Maryborough he started with Messrs. Wilson, Hart and Co., for whom he worked for a number of years. Since his retirement he spent most of his time in Townsville and Pialba, and became interested in property in both places. In more recent years he lived at Woondum, near Gympie. He was a very old member of the Kennedy Lodge, P.A.F.S.O.A., Townsville, also a member of the Masonic order. His wife predeceased him by 11 years, also one daughter. He is survived by three sons and two daughters. Sons are Messrs. John (Woondum), Robert (Queensland National Bank, Warwick) and Alexander (Railway Department,Townsville), and daughters are Miss Isabella McFarlane and Mrs. E. G. Kent (Townsville). There are two brothers, Messrs. Samuel and Arthur McFarlane residing in Maryborough. There are 18 grandchildren. | |
